Space use and re-allocation has been presented as a priority for our City. Beyond the urgency of housing insecurity and affordability, access to space is a recurring concern and challenge raised by the arts community. What can we learn from artist-run and artist-centred spaces, and how can artists best advocate for themselves and our invaluable creative hubs, studios, and venues amidst ongoing downtown revitalization and potential displacement.

Monique Fuller
Monique Fuller is a dedicated community builder, co-founder of the Ottawa Black Artists Kollective (OBAK) and hosts La Luta Continua, Friday Mornings on CKCU
Jason St Laurent
Artist and curator Jason St-Laurent studied fine arts at the Université de Moncton and the University of Toronto. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the United States, South Africa, Romania and Finland, notably at the Western Front in Vancouver, VertexList in New York City, the South African National Gallery Annex and MUU in Helsinki.
As a curator, St-Laurent has presented more than 75 exhibition projects in Canada, South Africa, Finland and Estonia, including SCATALOGUE: 30 Years of Crap in Contemporary Art at Galerie SAW Gallery, Voices in Transit at the Cape Town Central Train Station in South Africa and Videogram International Media Art Exchange as programmer for SAW Video.
Jason St-Laurent founded the biennial ELECTRIC FIELDS: Festival of Electronic Art and Sound in Ottawa and worked as the Director of Programming for Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival from 2005 to 2012. He has been the Curator at SAW since 2012.
Nathalie Carrier
Nathalie Carrier’s strong Vanier and franco-ontarienne roots led her to Vanier, a vibrant, forward-thinking community where people from all different walks of life can coexist. Nathalie brings that same dream-big mentality to the BIA that she harnessed as Manager, Event Production for Ottawa 2017, bringing spectacles such as La Machine, Red Bull Crashed Ice, Picnic on the Bridge and Kontinuum to the capital. As a former TV Producer and Talent Agent she’s no stranger to hard work and exceeding expectations. She’s worked closely with some of the country’s most influential people which has garnered her a unique network of collaborators. For Nathalie, leading the BIA isn’t just about “banners and benches” – it’s about community building with a vision based on what Vanier is, was, and what it has the potential to be.

Harar Hall
"I am a non-binary femme (sometimes?) in my late twenties. I am Black, and Caribbean – both at the same time and individually. I consider my Jamaican identity to be something beautiful and special that flows into the tapestry of Blackness but is strong and distinct and I recognize it as such. I am queer in many interpretations of the word. Perhaps, because of this, I love politics and community organizing and working towards better models of political change and community care - the work I do professionally is oriented around these goals. I have an MA in International Affairs with a Specialisation in Conflict and Conflict Management from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and over 7 years of experience working with nonprofits, government, corporations and student organisations."
